As you may know, my book Great British Bakes: Forgotten Treasures for Modern Bakers was published on November 7th.
I spent a long time researching, baking and photographing the recipes, and not all of the pictures could be squeezed into the book itself, so I thought I’d display some the ones that didn’t make the cut here on the blog. Enjoy!

I have bought the kindle version to read here in Australia today. I’m really looking forward reading it and trying some of the recipes. I love your approach of going into the history of food and finding forgotten recipes. Very inspiring.

I made the potato bread to go with Scotch broth. Bread is absolutely amazing. Al lot more fluffy that I would have imagined and with a nice taste too.
I know! I was very pleasantly surprised too. Keeps lovely and moist, too 😀 M-A
Got your book yesterday and already I have read more than half – what an outstanding job you have done, Mary-Anne. It was supposed to be a Christmas present from my son but I won’t give it up now that I’ve actually got my hot little mitts on it lol! Like you I love looking for old baking recipes and I’m so glad that you’ve brought so many back into the limelight. Really can’t heap enough praise on you – CONGRATULATIONS.

Looks amazing, and I wish more cookbook authors would do this – since photos are so expensive to print & publish, many cookbooks just scatter a couple dozen images and expect cooks to use their imagination and hope they manage to match the recipe to the reality. If I could wave a wand and make a permanent change in the publishing industry, I’d simply give authors a dedicated website for their books (I’m holding firmly to the belief this is just your ~first~ book. You are my favorite type of food writer – an excellent cook who is just as passionately enthralled with the back stories that make up the how/why/where/who/when of foods.) and have them have photos of everything in the book. Heck, have the publisher spend just a bit more at the start and add perhaps videos and step by steps – keeping the ingredient lists unpublished so they don’t make buying the book pointless – and I think book sales would soar! I’ll confess I’ve put no doubt excellent books back on the shelf in favor of another book full of images of what I’m trying to achieve and I doubt I’m the only one. That all being said – HUGE congratulations on this (first – yes, I’ll keep poking in the hopes of more coming down the pike in time, I’m content to be shameless… but if bribery helps, if you ever find yourself in the USA near northern Ohio, I would be thrilled to give you lunch and as much tea or homebrewed mead you could want.) book. I’ve ordered my copy and now just have to wait for overseas mail to wing it to me eager arms.
Actually, from what all that I’ve learned about your style here on your blog, I may have to order a 2nd copy. One for the kitchen and one to curl up with a large mug of tea by the woodstove. A cooking copy and a lazy day dreamy version. An amazing cook, storyteller and historian… Perfection!

Anytime at all! When your 700+ cookbook collection was on TGBB was brought up, my husband paused the show, blinked, looked over at me in started wonderment and said “Lawd, there’s another one like you out there?”. We’ve had to build shelves in every room in the house, from the bathroom to a bedside ~wall~ to try and keep ahead of my book collection. One of the perks of this old home we’re slowly restoring is it is about a mile each way to a wonderful 2nd hand bookshop, which has at least kept me slightly sensible in how many I buy at a time (new books usually ordered online, but there is something lovely about a 2nd hand bookshop) because I make myself walk there when I want to shop. While I AM a long legged gal at 6’2, if I know I have to carry books home, I can force myself to not go TOO nutty. Usually. Only had to call a taxi once, and in my defense, they had 1-33 in the Discworld series, for only $15 for the whole lot and I am always losing copies to borrowing friends so I ~HAD~ to buy them! It would be lovely to share a wander through my stacks with a fellow book devourer.
Had to come back to say – the book arrived, it’s absolutely stunning and I was wrong about needing to order another copy….
I’m gonna have to order 3 more (and actually am this afternoon) – a ‘good’ copy for simply lazing about with my mug of tea, this first is the cooking model, one going straight onto the lending bookshelf because I’m already getting earnest little “hey, I can borrow this soon, right?” from friends and the last is going onto the “Safe Perfect Copies For the Future” bookshelf in the bedroom, right next to my pristine hardcopy collection of Terry Pratchett (just seems the right place somehow. I also have multiple knockabout paperback versions of his books for loaning, but friends know I’ll growl and hiss if they step too close to the “Special” bookshelf!) books. And that’s just for ME. It’s high on the ‘I’ve got cookery friends who would love this” gift list. Simply excellent book!
I just took your book from library and Im in love. Is the first cookery book which I read like story and I want bake everything. I have to buy this book because I know I must have in my library. And also I was surprised about so many different British cakes . Is a great book.
